SLOVENIAN WINE
CULTURE
A PART OF SLOVENIAN IDENTITY
Wine holds a significant role in Slovenian identity as well as in the daily life of Slovenians, for a multitude of reasons. First, with over 26,000 grape growers who produce wine for family use, it's safe to say that virtually every Slovenian is either involved in winemaking or knows someone who is.
This close connection to winemaking contributes to the prominence of wine in Slovenian culture. Slovenia's small size and excellent infrastructure mean that all three wine regions can be reached within just an hour's drive from the capital, Ljubljana, which is centrally located in the country.
Notably, Slovenians have a robust wine-drinking tradition, consuming more than 35 liters of wine per person each year, which places them among the top European countries in wine consumption. Wine is a cherished companion at a wide range of significant celebrations, from birthdays to various anniversaries, underscoring its role as a cherished and integral part of Slovenian culture and life.
Slovenian consumers demonstrate a strong enthusiasm for learning about wine, and the wine culture in the country is continually evolving and improving with each passing year. This passion for wine is evident through the numerous national, regional, and local wine festivals celebrating specific grape varieties and wine styles. Often combined with culinary delights, these festivals provide an excellent opportunity for day trips or longer journeys to explore the various wine regions.
One particularly significant date in the Slovenian wine calendar is November 11th, St. Martin's Day, traditionally celebrated as the day when must is transformed into wine. This occasion is marked with festivities and feasting in all regions, drawing thousands of people to partake in this cherished tradition.
NATIONAL ANTHEM
Slovenia is perhaps the only country in the world whose national anthem is a wine toast – written by the greatest Slovenian poet – France Prešeren.
“Zdravljica”
The vintage, friends, is over,
And here sweet wine makes, once again,
Sad eyes and hearts recover
Puts fire into every vein.
Drowns dull care
Everywhere
And summons hope out of despair.….
God's blessing on all nations,
Who long and work for that bright day,
When o'er earth's habitations
No war, no strife shall hold its sway;
Who long to see
That all men free
No more shall foes, but neighbours be!
